A Brief History of Fort King

Named after Colonel William King, who commanded the Fourth Infantry, Fort King was initially established to manage relations between settlers and the Seminole tribe. Its presence marked the U.S. government's determination to assert control over Florida's interior regions. The fort became a focal point during the Second Seminole War, the longest and most costly conflict between the U.S. and Native American tribes.

Over time, the fort was abandoned and fell into disrepair. However, through dedicated archaeological efforts and community support, the site has been preserved and revitalized, allowing visitors to experience this significant landmark firsthand.
